Our Journey & History

Uniting Against Slavery

Our roots trace back to a group of determined abolitionists who initiated the IRA movement in 2010, a resolute effort against slavery. As time unfolded, this very group recognized the need for a more effective approach, leading to the inception of the Sahel Foundation. While the practice of slavery has diminished, its traces still linger in society. Thus, our focus shifted towards combating these vestiges through comprehensive means, aiming to uplift ex-slaves with education, healthcare, and civil identity restoration.

Brahim Ramadhane

Anti-slavery Activist and Founder

Ramadahane has risen as a formidable anti-slavery activist, igniting a beacon of hope through his unwavering dedication to justice and education. As the founder of the Sahel Institution for Human Rights, he has tirelessly fought against slavery, aiming to dismantle its roots through education. Ramadahane’s journey, marked by personal struggles and a profound transformation, echoes the potential of education to break the chains of ignorance and prejudice, casting light upon the path to liberation and equality for all. Ramadhane is from the Haratin ethnic minority in Mauritania, and was a slave for the first 20 years of his life. Education is what helped to set him on the road to freedom:
